There’s a trend, I’ve noticed, for English-speakers to create increasingly noncommittal sentences. I’ve caught myself uttering these words, and recently have tried to excise them as much as possible. Things like: “that’s really kind of…” or “that’s very sort of…”.
It seems that for fear of insulting their peers, people are diluting their thoughts with these expressions. This becomes quite dulling as people begin to chain such expressions together creating passionless and oxymoronic sentences.
Eddie Izzard touched on this idea when discussing the word “awesome”. Don’t we want these words to keep their power?

War is the H-Word, Futurama
Aaaaand we’re back! I hope. Moving to another continent is hardly a trifle, I suppose is the lesson. Over the past month I greatly enjoyed the Olympics, as I always do, and if there’s one thing I wanted to mention it’s this hysterical PRI broadcast from their Olympic coverage. (You’ll find it halfway down the page under the title “Britain’s Olympic glory”)
Instead of being good at sports the British have become good losers. Your American attitude, if you don’t mind me saying, is that second is nowhere and that nice guys finish last. Our attitude is that no one is nicer or laster than we are. If there’s a new way of losing and showing an extreme lack of skill we’ll be the first to demonstrate it and then give the impression that nothing could have pleased us more.
Well worth a listen, if you missed it.
