Something that is interesting about olfaction is it seems to have a very intimate connection with the sense of emotion and memory. We’re interested in why it is that it seems to be such a visceral and emotional sensory modality.
As I’ve started living in California, the scent of the evening air has evoked the great memories of my childhood visits. Smell is without a doubt the sense I am most acutely aware of. It’s interesting to learn that there’s scientific evidence behind the vivid memories smells can conjure for me.

Leonard Nimoy on Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!
If rumors are to be believed, Michael Jackson is dating Pamela Anderson and is publicly appearing in a white mask looking much like a statue come to life. The outfit is amazing, perplexing and mysterious. I don’t doubt that it’s Jackson.
On a related note, I witnessed another masked man on Tuesday – the phenomenal French electronic musician, Danger. I had a fantastic chat with him before the show, we discussed music, design, education and showmanship. This kid has a bright future with the likes of Daft Punk and Justice.

The Fitbit Tracker contains a motion sensor like the ones found in the Nintendo Wii. The Tracker senses your motion in three dimensions and converts this into useful information about your daily activities. The Tracker measures the intensity and duration of your physical activities, calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, how long it took you to fall asleep, the number of times you woke up throughout the night and how long you were actually asleep vs just lying in bed.
From what I can tell, it seems very well thought-out. Can’t wait to hear the reviews.

Google is developing a browser called Chrome, due to launch tomorrow.
All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends — all using a browser. Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that’s what we set out to build.
A fun comic drawn by Scott McCloud accompanies the launch detailing Chrome’s innovations, the core of which is a multi-threaded process manager. Screenshots of the browser appear, showing off Google’s take on the “speed-dial” feature of Opera.
Mozilla’s revenue has long been dependent on Firefox’s integrated Google search. Is Chrome setting out to save Google some money or is this the first piece of a fully-fledged Google OS?
01:57 AM | Tags: google, softwareAaaaand we’re back! I hope. Moving to another continent is hardly a trifle, I suppose is the lesson. Over the past month I greatly enjoyed the Olympics, as I always do, and if there’s one thing I wanted to mention it’s this hysterical PRI broadcast from their Olympic coverage. (You’ll find it halfway down the page under the title “Britain’s Olympic glory”)
Instead of being good at sports the British have become good losers. Your American attitude, if you don’t mind me saying, is that second is nowhere and that nice guys finish last. Our attitude is that no one is nicer or laster than we are. If there’s a new way of losing and showing an extreme lack of skill we’ll be the first to demonstrate it and then give the impression that nothing could have pleased us more.
Well worth a listen, if you missed it.
