This has to be one of my favorite MetaFilter posts. The community links to all manners of amazing cephalopods, highlighting the beautiful blanket octopus which I had never heard of.

These species have an extreme degree of sexual dimorphism. According to the Melbourne Museum, “there’s no other non-microscopic critter that has such a significant size difference between the male and female.” Measuring only 2.4 cm long, the male blanket octopus is incongruously smaller than the female who can grow to over 2 m. This means that the female can be 100 times larger than her mate, and up to 40,000 times heavier.

The Big Picture has been buzzing for the past few months and I must add my voice to the praise. Since it came into the spotlight several sites have followed its lead, bringing more pixels to the people. A couple weeks ago I evoked The Digital Journalist and I’ve particularly been enjoying FXcuisine which reports about food with saliva-inducing photographs. CurdNerds made mention of their excellent essay on alpine cheesemaking and I just had to link to it too.

Bootleg Ham

Once in a while I have one of these crazy dreams that’s just too absurd to forget. Here was last night’s, I’m thinking about keep a record of them.

It wasn’t a very long dream; I had the general sensation that a totalitarian regime had overtaken the United States and banned cured meats. The dream started at the entrance of a derelict stone building in a deciduous forest that looked much like the one close to my home in France. I anxiously approached the thuggish Jamaican man who guarded the building. He walked me down a spiraling stone stairway, the air was cool and humid. At the bottom of the stairs we entered what seemed to be both literally and figuratively an underground butcher shop. The room was white and surprisingly well lit, from the ceiling hung various dried meats: sausages, ham, jerky and biltong. A second Jamaican man dressed in a white butcher’s apron sold me bootleg Prosciutto. I woke up.

What this dream really means, I don’t know. Maybe a simple craving for Italian ham? Perhaps it was a reflection on modern society becoming estranged from simple pleasures.

Saw this nice old painting sitting behind the counter at my local Goodwill. It was a full hundred bucks so I passed. Was that a mistake?

Interesting tidbit from one of the Genius Grant recipients, neurobiologist Rachel Wilson:

Something that is interesting about olfaction is it seems to have a very intimate connection with the sense of emotion and memory. We’re interested in why it is that it seems to be such a visceral and emotional sensory modality.

As I’ve started living in California, the scent of the evening air has evoked the great memories of my childhood visits. Smell is without a doubt the sense I am most acutely aware of. It’s interesting to learn that there’s scientific evidence behind the vivid memories smells can conjure for me.

If rumors are to be believed, Michael Jackson is dating Pamela Anderson and is publicly appearing in a white mask looking much like a statue come to life. The outfit is amazing, perplexing and mysterious. I don’t doubt that it’s Jackson.

On a related note, I witnessed another masked man on Tuesday – the phenomenal French electronic musician, Danger. I had a fantastic chat with him before the show, we discussed music, design, education and showmanship. This kid has a bright future with the likes of Daft Punk and Justice.
